About the Project:
BKO Hunger fights food insecurity in our community. We have three main objectives:
- Provide Bucks County food pantries with shelf stable, nutritionally enhanced, pre-packaged meals. In 2013, volunteers packed more than 100,000 meals in just a few hours for BKO Hunger. The benefit of these meals is that they have added vitamins and nutrients, are easy to prepare. Because we use volunteers to measure, pack, sort and seal meals, they cost just 25 cents each.
- Provide Bucks County food pantries with additional funds to fill the gaps. Pantries in Bucks County both struggle to meet demand and have difficulties securing certain items. Lean proteins and other perishable items do not typically come in through food drives. Providing additional money directly to panties county-wide helps them fill gaps as needed.
- Provide Bucks County pantries with fresh, local fruits and vegetables. The vast majority of people who visit food pantries do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We all know that fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to a healthy diet. We have made getting fresh, local fruits and vegetables into Bucks County food pantries a BKO Hunger priority.
To accomplish these things, we ask members of our community to GIVE, ADVOCATE, and VOLUNTEER. Together, we make a difference.
The project was initiated in 2013 in response to a growing need. Bucks County food pantries are facing an increase in demand and, due to cuts in government funding, a decrease in supply.
That information was our call to action.
On August 9, 2013, people from across BUCKS COUNTY came together to KNOCK OUT HUNGER – and it was a BKO!
In about 3 hours, roughly 600 volunteers packed over 100,000 meals for local food pantries and senior centers.
BKO Hunger raised more than $48,000 in just a few weeks. The first $25,000 covered the supplies needed to pack 100,000 meals (and yes – that means each meal was just 25 cents!). The rest of the money went directly to Bucks County Opportunity Council and Rolling Harvest Food Rescue.
BCOC used the money to purchase of 8,500 lbs worth of items not typically donated, but sorely needed, such as lean meats, fish, butter, and other perishables.
Rolling Harvest used the money to provide more than 23,000 lbs of fresh, local, super-healthy fruits and veggies. Produce went directly from Bucks County farm to our food pantries. Participating farms gave Rolling Harvest the best rate possible. In the end, it’s good for Bucks farmers, healthy for families, and great for Bucks County!
People often ask if we are still accepting donations to BKO Hunger. OF COURSE! Hunger is a year round issue, so donations are accepted year round.
Donations made to BKO Hunger go to a special fund used only for this project.
