Ensuring Every Child is Ready to Succeed When They Enter School

The goal of United Way’s Success By 6 early childhood initiative is to ensure that every child in Bucks County is prepared and ready to succeed by the time they enter school. Success By 6 is built upon four pillars: Quality Early Care & Education, Literacy, Parenting, and Healthy From the Start.

Studies show when children have access to high quality care in their formative years, they are less likely to drop out of school, be unemployed, or have a felony arrest record, and more likely to attend college and work in a living wage job.

With approximately 39,000 children in Bucks County under the age of six, this initiative brings together child care providers, educators, advocates, businesses, government, parents, non-profit organizations and health professionals to ensure all our children are ready and able to succeed when they enter school.

A community-based, public-private partnership of individuals and organizations sharing a common vision, United Way of Bucks County’s Success By 6 initiative is part of the largest network of early childhood coalitions in the country.

United Way cares a great deal about our children. We actively pursue a number of educational and advocacy efforts to build a community of children who enter school ready to succeed and ready to maximize their true potential. Our children are our future and they are what matters™.

About Success By 6 Pillars

Quality Early Care & Education

Our Success By 6 initiative addresses the need for increased Quality Early Care and Education, as professional training for early childhood employees has been proven to have a positive impact on outcomes for children in areas of language and other developmental milestones, quality child care, and child safety:

  • Raising awareness of the need for quality child care programs
  • Educating parents about the importance of quality child care and preschool experiences for their children
  • Ensuring access to quality child care and preschool opportunities and positive transition to kindergarten for all children
  • Supporting professional training and development of early care professionals
  • Providing interventions for children with barriers to traditional learning

Literacy

Our Success By 6 initiative will promote early literacy as a foundation of integrated learning and success in school:

  • Supporting early literacy activities for parents, grandparents, and caregivers with their children
  • Increasing learning opportunities for children and parents/caregivers through library and community incentive programs
  • Establishing a tracking system for literacy progress among young children through preschool, kindergarten and elementary schools

Parenting

The Born Learning™ campaign, created in partnership by United Way of America, the Ad Council, Civitas and the Families and Work Institute, is designed to support parents and caregivers in their efforts to encourage early learning. Success By 6 distributes Born Learning™ materials through the county’s existing network of organizations and providers as well as through new partners to reach parents outside traditional social service networks.

Our SB6 initiative helps parents increase and enhance their child’s learning through everyday moments and activities together:

  • Helping parents make everyday moments “teachable moments” through the Born Learning™ Educational Materials
  • Assisting parents with access to services and resources for healthy development of their children ages 0-6
  • Identifying programs to support parents in their capacity as role models

Healthy from the Start

Our Success By 6 initiative focuses on raising awareness about health care and insurance options for families, the importance of prenatal care, proper nutrition and physical activity, and appropriate health care in order for our children to possess the healthy minds and bodies required to learn and succeed.

  • Promoting prenatal care so children are born healthy
  • Raising awareness of health & dental care services and immunizations for children
  • Making sure that all families are aware of health insurance coverage availability
  • Promoting early identification of developmental delays
