Why is Community Important?

It’s easy to become detached from the people around you in the digital age.  With so much of our communicating done through texting, email, and social media, we focus more on engaging with select groups -like co-workers or extended family- that we tend to neglect the people around us.  By centralizing our means of connecting with people, we become more disconnected from the world around us.  Strengthening local communities is something we should be prioritizing now more than ever.

Working Together

Communities are a place to develop a sense of belonging, togetherness, and being connected to others.  A community doesn’t necessarily have to be a place either.  The people who come together are what defines a community, enables their success, and contributes to their growth.  Volunteering in Bucks County, PA is a great way for us to come together and do more than we ever could alone.  With more hands we can do more for:

  • Early childhood education
  • Counseling services
  • Childcare services
  • Street outreach

Growing Together

Communities are also a place of sharing and giving.  They create means of obtaining resources, or making resources available that under other circumstances wouldn’t be.  Every person in a community has both unique needs and unique skills.  By working together they can offer their skills to help those in need and find ways to access the things we’re lacking.  Our Bucks County community service program provides many opportunities to help impoverished families have access to things such as-

  • Financial literacy programs
  • Training and workforce development
  • Finding safe and affordable housing
  • Emergency assistance

When struggling people no longer have to choose between paying rent and paying medical bills, they can put more time and energy into finding means of income that let them do both, and still save for the future.

Learning Together

Lastly, communities foster an atmosphere of understanding.  Many of the social issues we face today such as racism, sexism, and poverty overlap in terms of how they begin and the damage they can do.  We address these issues by creating a diverse coalition that allows us to learn more about the world around us and the struggles we face from different perspectives.  All walks of life are valued.
