Literacy

Early childhood literacy is affected by a variety of factors.  Poverty and poor health, family literacy, the language spoken at home, teacher expertise and the quality of a child’s pre-K experience all have an influence on whether he or she enters kindergarten with a strong literacy foundation.

Our SB6 initiative will promote early literacy as a foundation of integrated learning and success in school:

    • Supporting early literacy activities for parents, grandparents, and caregivers with their children
    • Increasing learning opportunities for children and parents/caregivers through library and community incentive programs
    • Establishing a tracking system for literacy progress among young children through preschool, kindergarten and elementary schools
